the most eastern tower of the bay bridge's western span about 35 feet of the tower's fender damaged. there was no oil spill, no injuries, no significant damage to the bay bridge when it comes to drive safety at least. and the coast guard is still interviewing the crew of that vessel. live on treasure island, anne makovec, cbs 5. >> an east bay man picked the wrong apartment to try to rob. it happened in pittsburg where a man killed the burglar who had forced his way into his home. police spent 12 hours processing the crime scene. it started about 10:30 yesterday morning. a 29-year-old man heard somebody at his front door trying to get in. so he went for his firearm. >> reached back to his bedroom and retrieved a loaded firearm. by the time he makes it back to the front door, he is confronted by the suspect who is now inside of his house. >> there was a fight between the homeowner and the 54-year- old intruder who carried a

replica gun and both men lost their weapons. that's when the homeowner grabbed a knife and stabbed the burglar. the man died. he had a long rap sheet including burglaries. police are questioning two other people to may have been involved. >> valuable artifacts stolen from the oakland museum. thieves broke in on monday, took off with a historic gold box worth more than 80$0,000. museum officials and mayor quan will announce a reward at 9:30 a.m. this is the second time in two months someone broke into the museum. the water is back on at a bay area hospital disrupted by a pipe problem. alta bates medical center in oakland declared a code dry for the building yesterday afternoon halting all water use. surgeries were halted and no water was available anywhere.

the problem a plumbing failure. the code dry lasted for more than 4 hours. this morning, vice president joe biden is talking about ways to curb gun violence. he is meeting with victim groups and gun safety organizations. tomorrow he will meet with the national rifle association and other gun owner groups. president obama wants biden to hear about those policy plans by the end of the month e. the obama administration says when american troops pull out of afghanistan at the end of next year, the u.s. could pull out all of them. white house officials say they are considering the so-called zero option which would bring home every u.s. soldier in the country despite the pentagon's view that some troops need to stay to keep al qaeda at bay. for the continental united states, 2012 was the hottest on record. according to government scientists, the average temperature was 55.3 degrees. that broke the record set back

in 1998 by one degree. >> of course it doesn't apply to today because it was chilly. >> it was chilly this morning. no frost on my window yet but -- >> but we'll see temperatures struggling to get out of the 40s tomorrow maybe snow down to 1500 feet. so big changes around the bay area for today. a lot of clouds beginning to move in. we have some patchy, dense fog early on this morning in the valleys but you can see the cold front now sliding into the state bringing some showers into far northern california. that is going to usher in some much colder temperatures outside even a chance of rain by the afternoon. as we look outside right now, we have mostly cloudy skies a little bit hazy. the temperatures a little cool in spots. 39 degrees in concord with some fog. 37 in livermore. 48 degrees in san francisco. and 44 in san jose. this afternoon, well, we're going to try and watch these temperatures cool off again. yesterday we had some 50s and 60s. by the afternoon, these temperatures really going to start to dive. this is the beginning. much cooler air. we are going to see these

numbers down a good 3 to 8 degrees by this afternoon and then tomorrow, there is a chance we could see some snow down to about 1500 feet in some of the north bay valleys and temperatures struggling to get out of the 40s. that's a look at weather. let's check on traffic with elizabeth. >> we are going out to south san jose where we have been following an overturn accident. we are not sure about the extent of the injuries. it's an overturn accident. the car is in a ditch on the right-hand shoulder southbound 101 approaching blossom hill road. at this point, our sensors are not picking up any major delays. actually in both directions. overnight we only had one northbound lane open across the golden gate bridge. it looks like they have done some lane changes. i just saw a truck driving by doing those lane changes so now more northbound and southbound lanes open. they picked up a lot of overnight roadwork. elsewhere, your drive time still in the clean down the popular freeways through the altamont pass in livermore, down the eastshore freeway and westbound 24, and the nimitz.

let's see, let's go out get a check of -- what did we put in there -- the bay bridge where overnight we had roadwork on both decks. they should be wrapping up the upper deck roadwork. lower deck roadwork still there heading towards oakland. 880 near hegenberger we have our live traffic camera and you can see things are flowing nicely this morning. but you may find some roadwork in lanes between 66 and 980 in both directions. that is traffic. back to you guys. >> thank you. bay area headlines now bay area investigators looking into the cause of a luna park, san jose, garage fire reported about 7:30 last night at a home near east taylor and north 15th streets. neighbors feared someone might have been inside the garage but it turns out that was not the case. nobody was injured but the garage is a total loss. three vehicles and a boat were also destroyed. repairs are under way at the oakland unified school district headquarters which got flooded. someone apparently left a tap

open in a custodian's closet all night. the water damaged every floor in the building. staff will work out of another building during the clean-up. and in palo alto, a close call at a landmark shopping center. a car drove into one of the stores at the town & country village on el camino real. this happened yesterday afternoon. nobody injured there either. police are investigating how this happened. there are some concerns about boeing's state-of-the-art 787 dreamliner after two mishaps involving the passenger planes in boston this week. the latest was yesterday when a japan airlines jet leaked fuel while taxiing at logan international airport. it followed an electrical fire on another plane monday after passengers disembarked following a flight from tokyo. but cbs aviation analyst captain chesley sullenberger says it's too soon to judge the new plane. >> no matter how much testing you do there are some things that are inevitably discovered

it's video of a living ten-foot- long giant squid. researchers... working with here is a look at something you probably haven't seen before video of a living 10- foot-long giant squid. researchers working with a japanese network nhk and the discovery channel say it's the first-ever footage of a live giant squid in the pacific ocean. biologists say the squid has suck, lined with sharp teeth and two very long tentacles. the footage is part of an upcoming special, monster squid: the giant is real. complete with sound effects.

>> you don't want to bump into that! >> no. >> shall we check the roads? >> liz is ready, right? >> is that who was yelling, the scientist? >> yes. >> weird eerie sound effects. >> let's show you what's going on. if you are traveling for san jose, it looks like northbound and southbound both moving at the limit. we'll get a quick bridge check. crossing the san mateo bridge this is the commute direction of westbound 92 towards the high-rise, still only about 14 minutes in either direction. so obviously both sides of that span look good eastbound and westbound. so to our maps now. some areas of overnight roadwork has been picked up now that we're past 5:00 including westbound 84. but look at this. we are seeing some slowdowns now on eastbound 84 because that roadwork is scheduled to

wrap up closer towards 6:00 this morning. so another 45 minutes or so and that's when caltrans crews will head out. otherwise, southbound 101 approaching blossom hill, this is that accident, the one accident we're watching right now and it is off to the right- hand shoulder so that's the good news. not blocking lanes but it sounds like a car actually went off the roadway down a ditch. sometimes they need a tow crew so a lane may be blocked. southbound 101. golden gate bridge flowing nicely both directions. they have more in northbound and southbound lanes. that's a check of your "timesaver traffic." let's get an update on your forecast and lawrence is talking snow. big changes coming our way. outside now we have fog in the valleys visibilities less than

a quarter mile inland temperatures in the 30s and 40s. as we look toward this afternoon, we have a cold front swinging on in bringing with it at least a chance of showers as we head throughout the day especially toward the afternoon hours and into the evening. all right. high pressure that's been hanging out over the last couple of days looks like it's going to be moving out of town. this cold front on final approach bringing with it all that cold air from the gulf of alaska. so these temperatures really going to take a nosedive and that's why we're looking at snow down to about 1500 feet maybe in the north bay maybe about 2,000 feet into the santa cruz mountains. let's see if we can time it out a little bit. some clouds out there right now. through the day they will thicken up and then in the afternoon, 1:00, we again to see a few showers beginning to show up in the north bay. and then it slowly sags to the south so the commute could be wet at times. by 7:00 showers all the way down into san jose. behind that, that's when that really cold air moves in. the moisture will be limited but if you could see some snowflakes over the mountaintops, if we get some of the cells to move over land. so with that in mind, it looks like big changes coming up in the next couple of days heading

to the high country bring your chains. today we're expecting about 46 degrees mostly cloudy in tahoe rain in much of far northern california. and around the bay area today, these temperatures will started to drop off. plan on 56 degrees in livermore, 55 degrees in san francisco, and about 55 also in santa rosa. next couple of days could be a little unsettled and possibly wet into tomorrow morning. the temperatures by tomorrow afternoon 40s and low 50s for highs, it will be cool. dry but staying cool on friday. looks like partly cloudy skies over the weekend, guys, but these next couple of days it's going to be fun. >> yeah. it could be, lawrence. all right. thank you. new this morning, fisher- price is recalling 800,000 infant sleepers. they look like this. although the fabric cover comes in more than a dozen patterns and colors. the problem prompting the recall, mold could build up under the seat cushion and that could make your baby sick. fisher-price has had 600 reports of mold so far. a volunteer of the helps keep the loots from going out

over a vallejo high school -- keep the lights from going out over a vallejo high school. copper thieves have hit the school over christmas break when the school was empty but this time members of the site safety team were on patrol including on christmas. two of them actually caught a suspect. >> trying to grab copper, be prepared to be caught. >> if you do you have to deal with the site team. >> they came and arrested him. >> the 29-year-old suspect is under arrest on various charges. san jose is going to experiment with letting some downtown restaurants overflow into the street. they are called parklets or curb cafes letting restaurants pay for the right to use parking spaces to expand their spaces. restaurants would be able to build platforms for outdoor dining. one restaurant owner expects his business to jump by 15 to 20%. >> this is a huge trend. everybody is moving on outdoor

dining kind of taking back some of the streets and parking lots and sidewalks. >> might be night when it's nice out. the one year pilot program got unanimous support from the city council. it's models after a similar plan that created 42 parklets here in san francisco. >> you want to park your car, though, it's going to be tough. >> true. new study links depression to sweetened drinks especially for diet soda drinkers. 270,000 people were researched. those who drank more than 4 cups of soda a day were 30% more likely to develop depression. scientists say coffee has the opposite effect. people to drank 4 cups a day were about 10% less likely to have depression. the university of california has spent more than $4 million marketing its new online classes, but so far only one student has taken a class. the university began offering 14 digital courses a year ago.

unlike the uc, stanford and harvard offer online college courses for free. uc officials say the fact that their courses allow students to interact with professors and fellow students, more students will be signing up. an iconic church with a presidential past will soon help same-sex couples to tie the knot in washington, d.c. the washington national cathedral will announce today its new policy to implement a new rite of marriage for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender members. the cathedral has been used for presidential inaugural prayer services, state funeral services and actually for president eisenhower and johnson were held here, as well. a local author decided to make a big splash before a book signing. take a look. jamal agus swam to his event yesterday from treasure island to mainland san francisco. he said he had no concerns in the water. >> out there i felt great. it's all this stuff on land that i still have to worry about. >> he worries more on land.

fog in the valleys, 30s, 40s inside the bay, storm clouds coming our way. maybe some rain. we'll talk about that coming up. >> so far traffic cameras looking good this morning across the golden gate, beijing and the san mateo bridge. we have -- bay bridge and the san mateo bridge. we have areas of roadwork going on. "timesaver traffic" coming up. steroids wasn't an issue barry bonds would be a sure bet to be named to the baseball hall of fame today. but his first ballot selection is in question bus of performance-enhancing drugs bonds is baseball's only 7-time mvp. recognition for roger clemens and sammy sosa is also in question because of steroids.

confirmed it isn't a warning through its vest -- it sent a warning through its vessel traffic service. the investigation continues and you can see that i will tanker anchored off of the coast of treasure island this morning. the overseas reymar. now, according to state records, the captain that was piloting that vessel, guy kleess, he was involved in three previous scrapes, all minor, back in august of 2009 his ship grounding in the sacramento river. two days later, he damaged a dock at the port of stockton. then in may of 2010 he was supervisor every supervising a trainee on a tugboat that hit bottom in richmond's harbor but that was out of more than 1100 trips the captain has piloted. >> i don't think you can go through a career without having some interaction with the bottom or other vessels. >> reporter: captain kleess did pass an alcohol test. we are still waiting for word on a drug test. in the meantime, he is on paid administrative leave.

no word on how long that ship is going to remain here in our bay. live on treasure island, anne makovec, cbs 5. >> 5:31 now. this morning a reward will be announced for the return of a very valuable artifact that was stolen from the oakland museum. police say a thief broke into the museum on monday and took off with a historic gold box worth more than $800,000. oakland police and the mayor jean quan will join museum officials to announce the reward this morning at 9:30. this is the second time in two months someone has broken into the museum. the water is back on at a bay area hospital disrupted by a pipe problem. alta bates medical center in oakland declared a "code dry" for the building yesterday afternoon meaning the hospital halted almost all water use. during the time, all surgeries were on hold and no one could flush toilets or turn on any taps or drinking fountains. the problem, a plumbing failure. the "code dry" lasted for more than four hours flu season off to a quick

start in the united states and experts are concerned it could be especially bad this year. cbs 5's cate caugiran joins us from san francisco with more on the flu situation. good morning, cate. >> reporter: good morning, frank. hospitals in our area are already seeing a slight increase in flu cases from last year. and medical experts say, yes, it's too early to say but they are predicting that this flu season could go uglier than normal. typically, flu cases reach a peak in mid-february. but the situation is already bad in some cities like chicago. some hospitals are so overrun with flu cases, patients are turned away from emergency rooms. and doctors say one likely reason is the current vaccine does not prevent one of the flu strains currently making the rounds. >> at the moment, we have kind of we might call it a rogue virus out there causing about 10% of the cases. >> reporter: still, most doctors do recommend the vaccine to prevent other strains in california. experts say there are scattered

valleys again. 39 degrees with some fog into concord, 39 fog in santa rosa. 44 in san jose, 48 in san francisco. yesterday 50s and 60s even mid- 60s in oakland but this afternoon these temperatures really going to drop down about 3 to 8 degrees but you think that's cool? just wait until tomorrow. these temperatures going to be struggling to get out of the 40s, elizabeth. >> what's going on? can really feel it when it was 60s. it was nice yesterday afternoon. thank you, lawrence. outside we have a new problem now developing in livermore west gowan 580 in the commute direction approaching north livermore avenue. there's some sort of debris in the roadway. apparently several cars have driven over it and now they have flat tires off on the right-hand shoulder so a bad morning for some folks traveling through livermore causing delays through the altamont pass and towards vasco road. you can see changing color on our sensors. the drive time is up to 17 minutes now towards the dublin

interchange. also, this is another problem spot southbound 101 approaching blossom hill road in south san jose. car in a ditch. all lanes are open, never blocked any lanes. tow crews are out there now. southbound looks okay. northbound a little bit of slowing according to some members of our phone force. elsewhere live towards the bay bridge a quick look at that. upper deck roadwork picked up free and clear into san francisco. back to you guys. >> thank you. the san francisco board of supervisors has elected david chu president for a third term. the 42-year-old chu was re- elected in a unanimous vote. his duties include appointing chairs and members of board committees and running the full board's regular meetings. each term is two years. on the bay area watch this morning, one of the suspects in the murder of a south bay millionaire is expected back in court this afternoon. three men are charged with killing ravi kumra in his monte sereno mansion in september.

they could get the death penalty if convicted. training sessions are scheduled today for volunteers taking part in a count of san mateo county's homeless pop laying. the sessions will be held in belmont and redwood city counting the homeless population. vice president joe biden is talking about ways to curb gun violence meeting with victim groups and gun safety organizations today to discuss gun control policy plans in the wake of the newtown school shooting. tomorrow biden will meet with the national rifle association and other gun owner groups. president obama wants a report by the end of the month. a hearing continues in the shooting preliminary hearing of james holmes. his apartment was rigged with trip wires and a stereo was programmed to play loud music hoping to attract attention. the witness says a thermos of explosives was set up to spill into a frying pan containing another chemical that would start a fire. holmes appeared emotionless at the hearing.

with encouraging reports from alcoa and monsanto. that has stock futures up a little this morning. erica ferrari joins us from cbsmoneywatch.com. >> reporter: asian stocks were boosted this morning as a 4th quarter earnings season kicked off to a positive start. tokyo's nikkei up .5%, hong kong's hang seng also up .5%. wall street closed lower tuesday. the dow down 55. nasdaq down 7. after yesterday's closing bell, america's largest producer of aluminum posted its fourth quarter earnings. alcoa reported profits of $242 million. that's about a 6% increase from last year. american international group may join a lawsuit against the government. during the height of the financial crisis, a taxpayer- funded bailout totaling $182 billion saved aig from collapse. the complaint seeks $25 billion

a bit. futurecast model shows passing clouds. those clouds thickening up toward the afternoon. by 2 p.m. showers in parts of the north bay. then by 7:00 chance of showers in the bay area, in toward san jose. behind that, all that cold air against to move in. we could see snow down to 1500 feet tomorrow morning. possible delays at sfo if you are going there today. watch out for that. temperatures there 55 degrees, showers this afternoon. around the country again looks like more thunderstorms into houston at 70 degrees. sunny and dry in denver at 61. 46 in chicago. and 52 degrees in new york. i think we'll keep these temperatures down across the board today. these numbers dropping off a good 3 to 8 degrees from yesterday's highs. about 56 degrees in san jose. 55 in san francisco. and 53 degrees in san rafael. but if you think that's cool. just wait until tomorrow! i think these temperatures will struggle to get out 40s, maybe only low 50s with a chance of

scattered light showers i think tomorrow morning, then we dry things out for a cool brisk day tomorrow afternoon. cool friday and dry partly cloudy over the weekend a little bit unsettled. that's a look at weather. let's check on traffic with elizabeth. >> thank you, lawrence. and we're watching a couple of problems out there including in south san jose where they have gone ahead and blocked a lane because tow crews got out there. so the tow crew is what's blocking the lane. the car actually involved in the accident ran off the roadway and into a ditch. they are working to clear it now. in the meantime, expected a few delays southbound 101 near the blossom hill road exit. also, this is another problem spot this morning. the chp is working. there is some sort of debris in the road or at least there was westbound 580 at north livermore avenue, causing people to have flat tires. still off on the right-hand shoulder and now we have a long line of brake lights behind that scene. so 20 minutes now the drive time is in the yellow considered slow now because the delays have picked up towards

yosemite visitors goes public. a few more clouds rolling into our skies this morning. dense fog in the valleys, 30s there. 40s inside the bay. a chance of rain on the way today. we'll talk about that coming up. and the morning commute really starting to get under way now. a bit busy at the golden gate bridge over at the bay bridge a few delays maybe in the cash lanes and the milpitas commute very quiet leaving milpitas towards san jose. we'll have much more "timesaver traffic" coming up. >> all right, elizabeth. thank you. a plan to cap the number of yosemite visitors goes public. it's the result of a court order to protect the merced river. under the plan, officials would allow about 20,000 people a day at the park. that's roughly what they're seeing right now. but commercial rafting and mule rentals would be banned and there would be no more winter skating at curry village. a pair of wild turkeys has invaded a san jose neighborhood and one is apparently -- has apparently picked up a bad habit. it may not be around very long. it runs into passing cars.

somebody saw it coming just before a tanker scraped a tower on the bay bridge. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec over at treasure island reporting the pilot got a warning a little too late. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, that coast guard just confirmed that its vessel traffic service sent that warning to the pilot just moments before the vessel that you can see there behind me scraped the bay bridge on monday morning. that ship is called the overseas reymar. and it's been anchored off treasure island since monday. it turns out the man who was at the helm had had a few accidents in the past, as well. captain guy kleess was involved in three previous scrapes all of them minor. back in august 2009 his ship was briefly grounded in the sacramento river two days later damaged a dock at the port of stockton. and then in may of 2010, he was supervising a trainee on a tugboat that hit bottom in richmond's harbor. the investigation into what happened here is still under

two months someone has broken know that oakland museum. flu season has arrived in northern california and it could be nastier than normal. the illness has already reached high levels in some parts of the country. and cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran joins us from san francisco to explain why this might be happening. good morning. >> reporter: no doubt about it flu season is here in the bay area so wash your hands and hope your neighbor covers his cough because again, doctors are predicting it could get ugly here. doctors in our area are seeing an increase in flu cases in busy emergency rooms more so than last year but the situation is worse in other parts of the country like chicago. emergency rooms there are turning people away because there are filled with too many sick patients. the widespread sickness is probably because the current vaccine doesn't work on one of the flu strains. >> even if it
